One myth has changed in the mean time:

Silverlight 4 Browser Plugin does not run on:
iOS, Android, WebOS, Bada, Windows Phone 7.

Exceptions are: Some Phone 7 out of browser support, Nokia/Symbian Plugin, "Monodroid" (C# support for Android, commercial and not Silverlight).

Adobe however tries to get its Flash plugin onto any device, including Phone 7. Only Apple resists!

F@ct. Silverlight is killing Netflix. Streaming takes forever to load, then stops until I do a complete page reload. Hulu, YouTube (Google), and Apple can all stream a movie to me over the same crappy connection with no dropping or buffering (after the initial buffer). Silverlight FTF all the way.

yezu, i once was a flash programmer, and it was som much harder to code and especially debug.. Knowing already some .NET, i learned silverlight very quickly thanks to all the videos around the net and the forums on the silverlight.net site on which there are many microsoft programmers that reply.. Even if it were about "smashing" standards, do you want to wait 10 years so that maybe your html5 will run on some browsers, and good luck debugging and coding in it, or use something i find very very powerfull working now? even some simple html renders different in all browser, imagine html5! And there is no way you can compare the performance it renders beautiful effects (storyboards) and how easy it is to create them.. NO comparison..

Well I would not agree with You on some points:

Microsoft tools for Silverlight are expensive. - Yes they are. Expression Blend is quite costly, and some things are not possible to do without it.

Silverlight is buggy. - I don't know about 1,2 or 3 but 4 is pile of stinking crap. It is buggy.

It's hard to develop for Silverlight. - Yes it is. Through it's "buggyness", poor documentation (MSDN is a joke), shortage of examples and it's awry design. I have worked with many poor and difficult technologies, but Silverlight has been the most painful experience of my life.

Silverlight is about smashing open standards. - Of course it is. In the long run it Microsoft wants it to be THE standard for the web. "Embrace, extend, and exterminate" is what they call it.

Not sure I agree with you there on that last point. HTML5 is the final hint at a resolution the problems plug-ins are solving today, just it came to the party late. That being said, in mainstream usage Silverlight and HTML5 are somewhat parity in terms of end developers execution. "I want an interactive RIA" both can sustain that load (arguably HTML5 has more friction associated to it)

Silverlight and Flash may have "extras" that HTML5 don't have but that is really icing on the cake, as the core functionality and problems they are both solving are one in the same with HTML5 at the end of the day in mainstream usage (both consumer facing and enterprise).

Great post, Jeremy, but surprised you missed the excellent SparklingClient.com web site from your list of learning resources. Not only does the site totally "get" MVVM but they have just started a fun "The week in Silverlight" podcast that summarises the highlights of each week. Highly recommended. Their post on PRISM alone ( http://www.sparklingclient.com/prism-silverlight/ ) makes the site worth a visit.

Forgetting for a moment that learning Silverlight is important for many 'future' reasons, including possibly Windows Phone 7, it's just a great technology to work with.

The fact is it's a great multi-platform technology with almost limitless possibilities. It can leverage and interact with pretty much any other technology out there, Microsoft or otherwise, and it's so much fun.

Want to write a business app? No problem. A game? Yep. A website? Sure! Your imagination - and Silverlight's suitability to the task - is the only limit.

I've never used a technology that gives me the power to write such dramatically game-changing applications in such a short timeframe with such high quality code. It's truly amazing and a joy to work with.
